Personal statement: As people spend the larger parts of their days and lives in a work context, how one is treated by one's boss is enormously important for one's job satisfaction. Although respect, consideration and fairness from the side of bosses and coworkers are highly desired by employees, these needs rarely seem to be satisfied. In a world where external pressures to perform are continuously increasing, being considerate seems to be perceived as a burden rather than a virtue, I set out to understand what motivates leaders to make the extra effort necessary to make their followers feel worthwhile. At the same time, even if ethical behavior is intended, it is not always understood as such or reacted upon. Therefore, I hope to complete the picture of ethical leadership by taking the follower's influence into account.
